Developer Build a Rocket Boy (BARB) has launched what it calls a comeback bid for its troubled action-adventure game MindsEye, drawing comparisons to the remarkable turnaround achieved by Cyberpunk 2077 after its own disastrous release. Since MindsEye's rocky launch last year, BARB has faced significant internal upheaval, including staff layoffs. CEO Mark Gerhard has repeatedly attributed the game's failure to internal saboteurs, though no concrete evidence has been presented to the public to substantiate these claims.

The centerpiece of BARB's revival effort is a new content update called Blacklisted, released alongside a permanent price reduction. The Standard Edition of MindsEye now costs $34.99 and the Deluxe Edition $47.99. The Blacklisted update introduces a new mission in which players control Julia Black, a world-class assassin tasked with dismantling a criminal network undermining a company from both within and without. The thinly veiled narrative parallels Gerhard's accusations of corporate sabotage are immediately apparent to observers.

The Blacklisted mission was originally conceived as a crossover with the Hitman franchise, before MindsEye publisher IO Interactive withdrew from the collaboration. As a result, the mission retains the design sensibilities of that series: it is open-ended, features multiple targets, and can be completed in under an hour. Gerhard framed the release as just the beginning of MindsEye's future, pledging that BARB intends to continue expanding the game and its secondary content platform, Arcadia.

Arcadia is a built-in platform within MindsEye that hosts user-generated content, including custom missions, races, and challenges. Rather than releasing Blacklisted as traditional paid downloadable content, BARB delivered it through Arcadia, positioning it as a new model for content distribution. Gerhard expressed enthusiasm for what players and content creators could build using Arcadia's tools, suggesting the platform could become a meaningful driver of engagement if the game manages to attract a larger audience going forward.

Despite the update and price cut, early indicators suggest the comeback bid has struggled to gain traction. According to SteamDB, MindsEye had only 26 concurrent players on Steam at the time of reporting — a remarkably low figure for an actively promoted title. Player numbers for console versions on PlayStation and Xbox remain undisclosed, as neither Sony nor Microsoft publishes such data. The game was originally developed under the leadership of Leslie Benzies, the former head of Rockstar North and a key figure behind the Grand Theft Auto series.
