Two sources familiar with the matter confirmed his identity to NPR, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make public statements. Allen reportedly holds degrees in mechanical engineering from Caltech and computer science from California State University Dominguez Hills, and worked as a part-time tutor at a company called C2 Education.

According to Allen's LinkedIn profile, he described himself as a mechanical engineer, computer scientist, and teacher. He received a Teacher of the Month award from C2 Education in December 2024. One 17-year-old student he tutored, identified only as Jason, told NPR that Allen had been a good and intellectually gifted instructor. Jason said he appeared quirky but gave no indication of any violent intentions, expressing disbelief that someone he knew as a 'smart guy' could have been planning such an attack.

Minutes before the incident at the Washington Hilton hotel, Allen reportedly sent family members what the White House described as a manifesto. The document allegedly expressed a desire to target administration officials. Allen's brother reportedly alerted police after receiving the document. Separately, the Secret Service and Montgomery County police interviewed Allen's sister, who said her brother frequently made radical statements and often spoke of wanting to do 'something' to address problems he perceived in contemporary society.

Allen's sister also revealed that he had attended a No Kings protest in California and was affiliated with a group called The Wide Awakes, a social justice activist network that shares its name with an 1860s abolitionist youth movement. She disclosed that Allen had purchased two handguns and a shotgun, keeping them stored at their parents' home without their knowledge. The parents were reportedly unaware that any firearms were being stored on the property.

In addition to his teaching work, Allen was a self-employed video game developer who released a game called Bohrdom on the Steam platform in 2018. Financial records showed that in October 2024, he donated $25 to the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue, designated for Kamala Harris's campaign. The case raises serious questions about radicalization, warning signs, and the security protocols surrounding high-profile political events like the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

According to 9to5Google, the gradient aesthetic is specifically intended to signal the presence of AI-powered features within these applications, visually distinguishing next-generation products from their older counterparts.

Beyond color and shading, the new icons also reflect broader shifts in contemporary design trends. The look is described as more playful and vibrant, deliberately departing from the flat, minimalist aesthetic that dominated app design throughout the late 2010s and early 2020s. This shift mirrors industry-wide moves toward richer, more expressive visual identities that seek to engage users with greater visual depth and personality rather than stripped-down simplicity.

Several productivity applications have also received notable layout changes. Google Sheets, Slides, Forms, Sites, and Keep have all abandoned their portrait-oriented paper-sheet designs in favor of layouts that feel more contextually appropriate. Many of these icons now adopt a landscape orientation, which better reflects how documents and presentations are actually used in practice. The shift also makes the icons more visually distinct from one another, addressing a longstanding criticism that Google's productivity suite had homogeneous, hard-to-differentiate icons.

Most observers regard the new icons as a clear improvement, noting that they are more expressive and easier to distinguish at a glance. A notable exception is the redesigned Google Keep icon, which has attracted criticism for its appearance. The update to the Chat icon, which replaces a four-color speech bubble outline with a single green blob featuring a smile, has drawn favorable comparisons to the old Google Hangouts icon. An official rollout date has not been announced, though the timeline is expected to be soon.
