Spirit Airlines has ceased all operations after failing to secure a $500 million federal bailout from the U.S. government. The Florida-based budget carrier announced an immediate wind-down, cancelling every scheduled flight. Passengers were advised not to travel to airports, and the airline promised automatic refunds for tickets purchased directly through Spirit. The final Spirit flight landed overnight at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where air traffic controllers bid farewell to the crew in an emotional exchange captured in audio recordings.

Spirit Airlines filed for bankruptcy twice since 2024, accumulating losses exceeding $2.5 billion since the start of 2020. The airline attributed its collapse partly to surging jet fuel costs driven by the Iran war, which it said had significantly worsened its financial outlook. However, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy pushed back on this framing, arguing that Spirit was already in serious financial trouble long before the conflict began and that its low-cost business model had fundamentally failed.

In an attempt to survive, Spirit had already undertaken drastic restructuring measures throughout 2025. The carrier eliminated nearly 4,000 jobs and cut 200 underperforming routes. By year's end, approximately 7,500 employees remained, including 2,000 pilots and 3,000 flight attendants. Despite these painful measures, a second bankruptcy filing in August 2025 revealed that the company harboured serious doubts about its ability to continue as a going concern, signalling that a full shutdown was becoming increasingly likely.

Spirit's collapse reflects broader pressures weighing on the entire U.S. airline industry. Rising energy prices stemming from the Iran war have dramatically inflated operating costs across carriers. A Deutsche Bank forecast estimates that U.S. airlines' annual fuel bill will rise by $24 billion compared to pre-war projections. While airlines are expected to generate approximately $14 billion in additional revenue through fare increases and route adjustments, the sector is still projected to earn roughly $8.4 billion less than previously anticipated.

The Department of Transportation confirmed that Spirit holds a reserve fund to reimburse affected passengers. Those who booked directly through the airline using a credit or debit card will receive automatic refunds. Passengers who purchased tickets through third-party travel agents or booking platforms are advised to contact their point of purchase directly. Spirit has also established a dedicated website to address questions related to the shutdown process and help travellers navigate their options.

Researchers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and the University of Washington have developed a promising set of antibodies targeting the Epstein-Barr virus, or EBV. EBV is one of the most widespread viruses on the planet, estimated to be present in approximately 95 percent of adults worldwide. While it remains dormant and harmless in most people, EBV has been linked to several serious conditions, including multiple sclerosis and various cancers. The new antibodies represent a significant step toward preventing both initial infection and later reactivation.

EBV gains entry into the human body primarily by exploiting B cells — a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the immune system. Two proteins found on the surface of EBV particles, known as gp350 and gp42, act as keys that allow the virus to unlock access to B cells. The research team focused on developing antibodies that block the activity of these two proteins, theoretically preventing the virus from establishing itself in the body and stopping any subsequent reactivation.

One of the central challenges in developing EBV antibodies has historically been the virus's ability to bind to virtually every B cell in the human body, making it extremely difficult to identify specific immune cells that could serve as the basis for targeted antibodies. To overcome this obstacle, the scientists employed genetically humanised mice — animals bred to produce antibodies that closely resemble human antibodies. This approach significantly increases the likelihood that such antibodies would be accepted by the human immune system in future clinical applications.

When the humanised mice were exposed to the two EBV surface proteins, they produced precisely the targeted immune response the researchers had sought. From this process, the team successfully isolated ten new antibodies in the laboratory — two directed at gp350 and eight at gp42. In live animal testing, one antibody in particular demonstrated notably strong protection against EBV infection. Beyond the immediate findings, researchers noted that the methodology itself represents a broadly applicable new approach for identifying protective antibodies against other pathogens.

When EBV does cause noticeable illness in humans, it typically manifests first as infectious mononucleosis, commonly known as glandular fever. After the initial illness subsides, the virus retreats into a dormant, non-infectious state within the body. It can, however, reactivate and become considerably more dangerous, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems. Scientists hope these newly developed antibodies could eventually be used therapeutically in high-risk patients, offering protection against both initial infection and the more severe consequences of viral reactivation.
