The US has historically maintained strong unofficial ties with Taiwan, supplying it with advanced weaponry, while deliberately leaving ambiguous whether American forces would intervene in a Chinese military attack against the island.

Iran's nuclear program cast a shadow over the summit. Trump said he and Xi reached agreement that Tehran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, reflecting a rare area of consensus between the two powers. The threat of broader regional conflict added urgency to diplomatic efforts, as Trump flew home to Washington while his administration worked simultaneously on another front to prevent escalation in the Middle East.

On the Israel-Lebanon front, the US State Department secured a 45-day extension to the existing ceasefire, which had been set to expire over the weekend. Spokesperson Tommy Pigott confirmed that highly productive talks between the two sides had produced the extension. A political negotiating track is scheduled for early June, while a military security track will formally launch at the Pentagon on May 29, bringing military delegations from both Israel and Lebanon together.

Microsoft is moving to cancel most of its internal Claude Code licenses, shifting thousands of its developers toward GitHub Copilot CLI instead. The company had originally opened access to Anthropic's AI coding tool in December, inviting a broad range of employees — including designers and project managers with no prior coding experience — to experiment with it daily. Over six months, Claude Code proved extremely popular across the organization, becoming deeply embedded in the workflows of many Microsoft engineers.

Despite its popularity, Claude Code has created an internal conflict for Microsoft. The tool has directly competed with GitHub Copilot CLI, Microsoft's own command-line AI coding assistant, which operates outside traditional development environments like Visual Studio Code. Sources indicate that Microsoft's Experiences + Devices division — responsible for flagship products including Windows, Microsoft 365, Outlook, Teams, and Surface — will wind down its Claude Code usage by the end of June, encouraging engineers to transition their workflows to Copilot CLI in the coming weeks.

Microsoft frames the decision as a strategic effort to consolidate around a single agentic command-line tool. In an internal memo, Rajesh Jha, executive vice president of the Experiences + Devices group, acknowledged that Claude Code had been a valuable learning experience. He argued, however, that Copilot CLI offered something uniquely important: a product Microsoft could directly shape alongside GitHub to fit its own repositories, security standards, and engineering workflows in a way that a third-party tool cannot.

Financial considerations also appear to be driving the move. The cutoff date of June 30 coincides precisely with the last day of Microsoft's current fiscal year, making the cancellation of Claude Code licenses an efficient way to reduce operating costs before the new financial year begins in July. While Microsoft publicly emphasizes the strategic rationale, internal sources suggest cost-cutting plays an equally significant role in the timing and scale of the license cancellations.

The transition will not be seamless. Microsoft had specifically encouraged non-engineers to prototype ideas using Claude Code, and the tool remains more capable than Copilot CLI in certain areas. Developers within the company have reportedly preferred Claude Code over Copilot CLI during recent months, meaning real product gaps must now be addressed. The news comes as Microsoft had also reportedly considered acquiring Cursor, another AI coding tool, reflecting how fiercely competitive the AI-assisted development market has become.
