SpaceX does hold some advantages: Starship's steel construction can withstand temperatures up to 800 degrees Celsius, giving it greater tolerance for minor tile failures than the Shuttle ever had.

Footage captured by SpaceX drones after the Flight 13 landing revealed visible white streaks across Starship's heat shield, appearing to originate at tile boundaries — suggesting that hot gas may have penetrated the gaps between tiles during reentry. Additionally, cracked tiles and broken edges were observed. A new analysis co-authored by Rasky alongside former NASA astronaut Charles Camarda and Charles Miller, who led the NASA transition team for the Trump-Vance administration, concluded that despite incremental improvements, significant challenges remain on the path to rapid reuse.

Starship's core commercial promise rests on its ability to fly frequently and at dramatically reduced cost compared to conventional rockets. If each flight requires extensive post-landing inspection and tile replacement, those cost and turnaround advantages could be severely undermined. Engineers and analysts argue that SpaceX must develop an entirely new approach to thermal protection — one capable of withstanding repeated atmospheric reentries without the laborious maintenance that currently defines the post-flight process.
