Neighboring European countries moved swiftly to reinforce their own borders in response. French President Emmanuel Macron ordered additional police, aircraft, and drones to strengthen controls along France's border with Spain. Italy temporarily suspended a freedom-of-movement agreement with Spain, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani describing the decision as 'a necessary choice to safeguard the security of our citizens and defend the European borders.' The crisis prompted broader debate about EU-wide border security.

Ceuta has been Spanish territory since the 16th century and, along with the nearby enclave of Melilla, serves as one of the few entry points from Africa into European Union territory. Both cities are persistent targets for migrants seeking access to Europe. The precise cause of Thursday's sudden and unprecedented surge remains under investigation, but analysts point to a convergence of economic hardship in Morocco, misinformation spread via social media, and the activity of organized trafficking networks.

Migrants told reporters they were driven by unemployment and poverty in Morocco, with one 24-year-old stating simply that he crossed 'because there's no work' at home. Many were also misled by social media posts on Instagram and other platforms falsely claiming that a Spanish court ruling permitted new arrivals to remain in Spain. While a ruling did exist regarding sea arrivals, it did not grant migrants an automatic right to stay. Authorities emphasized that misinformation played a significant role in amplifying the scale of the crisis.

Google has pulled a newly launched Google Earth feature after it was live for just one day, following serious concerns about its potential for misuse. The tool allowed users to alter real satellite imagery using AI-powered text prompts, effectively enabling anyone to fabricate convincing images of real-world locations. The rapid removal highlighted the significant risks that arise when powerful generative AI tools are made accessible to the general public without adequate safeguards in place.

Digital investigator Henk van Ess of Digital Digging was among the first to expose the tool's dangers. He intentionally generated fabricated satellite images depicting scenarios such as refugees near the Mexican border and a bomb crater adjacent to a hospital in Gaza. His experiments demonstrated how easily the tool could be weaponized to produce misleading geopolitical imagery, raising alarms about the potential for such content to be used as disinformation in conflict zones or politically sensitive contexts.

When initially confronted with van Ess's findings, Google defended the feature by pointing out that images generated using the tool — reportedly powered by a model called Nano Banana 2 — were embedded with a digital watermark identifying them as AI-generated. The company also claimed it had implemented restrictions to prevent the creation of content on 'harmful topics.' However, van Ess reported that in his testing, 'nothing was refused, nothing was softened, and nothing suggested I try a different prompt.'

By the following day, Google reversed course entirely. In an updated statement, the company acknowledged that while geospatial professionals had found legitimate uses for the feature, users had also shared screenshots of generated imagery that appeared to violate its policies. Google emphasized that the AI-generated images did not appear within the main Google Earth interface for other users to view, and that all outputs were watermarked. Nevertheless, the company stated it was 'rolling back this feature while we work on implementing stronger guardrails.'

A critical flaw undermining Google's watermarking defense was also revealed. Van Ess demonstrated that he could fool Hive's AI detection tool using a video generated within Google Earth, suggesting that the watermarks alone were insufficient to prevent the spread of fabricated imagery. The incident has reignited wider debate about the responsibilities of tech companies when deploying generative AI features in tools that people inherently trust for factual, real-world information, such as mapping and satellite imagery platforms.
