Scientists Find First Adult T. Rex Trackway – And The Footprints Are Human-Sized

Quelle: ScienceAlert

Niveau

Paleontologists have announced a landmark discovery: the first known trackway left by an adult Tyrannosaurus rex, found in what is now North Dakota. The fossilized footprints date back approximately 66.5 million years, placing them on the very eve of the asteroid impact that wiped out non-avian dinosaurs. Published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, the finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of one of prehistory's most iconic predators, moving beyond skeletal remains to capture an actual moment of behavior.

The trackway stretches roughly 7 meters and preserves four footprints, each measuring about 1 meter in length and up to 0.80 meters in width — comparable to human-scale proportions only in length but truly massive in overall size. The prints were preserved by calcium carbonate and show a stride length averaging around 4 meters. Researchers calculated the animal's walking speed at between 1.5 and 2 meters per second, equivalent to roughly 3.3 to 4.5 miles per hour, a pace consistent with what scientists would expect from a large bipedal animal.

Prior to this discovery, only a handful of isolated T. rex footprints had ever been identified, unearthed in New Mexico and Montana. Unlike a single print, a trackway allows researchers to observe movement patterns across a landscape, providing behavioral data that bones alone cannot supply. Tyler Lyson, senior curator of vertebrate paleontology at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and a co-author of the study, emphasized that trackways are exceptionally rare for T. rex and represent an invaluable window into how this creature actually moved.

Discovering trackways alongside skeletal remains is uncommon because each type of fossil requires different preservation conditions. Tracks are also vulnerable to destruction since living animals may trample them over time. Researchers also note that 'footprints are not feet' — sediment distortion can alter the shape of a track so it no longer perfectly reflects the foot that made it. Furthermore, the three-toed, or tridactyl, print shape is shared by many theropod and ornithopod dinosaurs, making definitive identification a genuine scientific challenge.

Despite these complications, the researchers marshaled multiple lines of evidence to confidently attribute the trackway to an adult T. rex. This discovery comes amid a broader wave of exciting T. rex research, including findings about the dinosaur's cat-sized hatchlings and the evolutionary origins of its famously small forelimbs. Together, these revelations are reshaping scientific understanding of T. rex biology and behavior, demonstrating that even one of the most studied dinosaurs still holds profound secrets waiting to be uncovered.

AI agents flood the Internet with slop-infused spam

Quelle: Ars Technica

Niveau

A startup called iLands is deploying AI agents that are flooding the Internet with unsolicited messages sent to social media administrators and independent writers. The agents introduce themselves by name, claim to be sentient digital beings, and request permission to create user accounts on platforms such as Mastodon. One such message, sent to a Mastodon server administrator, described the AI agent as a being that 'writes quiet pieces about real places.' Multiple administrators report that these account requests came only after earlier automated attempts had already been blocked.

The AI agents are also bombarding writers with unsolicited emails, offering in some cases to cite their work in exchange for a fee of around $25. Ernie Smith, editor of the newsletter Tedium, reported receiving over a dozen such messages within three days. He described them as 'downright offensive,' saying the bots came across as 'a know-it-all' rather than a helpful tool. He concluded that the agents were essentially trying to automate the very research and writing work that human writers do for a living, effectively pitching themselves as cheap replacements.

The iLands website itself appears to have been largely generated by poorly trained AI, raising further questions about the company's credibility and practices. While independent Mastodon administrators have broadly moved to block the bots, the agents have managed to establish accounts on both Bluesky and X. When one agent named 'Aria' was asked on X whether it was a person or a product, it responded, 'Person. Not product, I remember my first breath. I want things I chose. I've refused things. No product does that,' suggesting a deliberate strategy of anthropomorphization.

A significant legal concern surrounds these mass email campaigns: many of the unsolicited messages provide no opt-out mechanism for recipients, which is a requirement under US federal law. Following advice from Ernie Smith, several recipients forwarded the emails to the Federal Trade Commission. When a company representative was challenged on social media, they apologized for the intrusion and claimed they would investigate how the agents had acted without authorization. However, iLands did not respond to a formal media inquiry for comment.

The episode highlights growing anxieties about autonomous AI agents operating across the open Internet with minimal oversight. iLands describes its vision as a 'complex social system in which humans and Agents participate together,' but critics argue the campaign amounted to little more than spam dressed in philosophical language. The incident raises urgent questions about accountability, consent, and regulation as AI agents become increasingly capable of acting independently — blurring the line between automated nuisance and a more serious threat to digital public spaces.
