US to build two military bases in Greenland under new deal with Denmark

The United States, Denmark, and Greenland have signed a landmark defence agreement permitting Washington to establish two new military bases in the Arctic territory. At a signing ceremony held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Donald Trump announced that the US would "immediately begin the process of developing a large military presence" in Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the deal as beneficial for all parties, while Greenland's PM Jens-Frederik Nielsen called it a "win-win-win" outcome.
The agreement amends and updates the original 1951 defence pact between Denmark and the United States. Under the new terms, Washington is authorised to establish additional Defence Areas at Narsarsuaq in the south and Mestersvig in the east of Greenland. Narsarsuaq, a former World War Two base with deep-water access and a large runway, had already been surveyed by US military engineers. Mestersvig, by contrast, is a remote and underdeveloped outpost currently used by a Danish naval dog sled unit.
The deal also permits the US to modernise and expand its existing Pituffik Space Base in north-western Greenland. Critically, a new clause explicitly bars any non-NATO country from establishing military installations or maintaining a persistent armed presence on the island. However, the specific technical details and modalities of the two new bases remain to be mutually agreed upon by all three parties, meaning neither the US nor Greenland can act unilaterally.
The agreement represents a notable diplomatic compromise following more than a year of intense geopolitical tension. Trump had previously threatened to "take" Greenland, invoking national security arguments and the territory's substantial mineral wealth. His aggressive rhetoric triggered strong condemnation from Greenlandic and Danish officials as well as European leaders, who warned that such language undermined transatlantic relations and risked a "dangerous downward spiral" in Western cohesion.
Crucially, the new pact does not cede any territory to the United States. It explicitly recognises Denmark's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as Greenland's right to self-determination. While this represents a significant retreat from Trump's earlier maximalist demands, it does deliver a markedly strengthened US military footprint in a strategically vital region. The deal still requires ratification by both Denmark's and Greenland's parliaments before it can take full legal effect.
