Donald Trump has announced a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to import Russian diesel into the United States. Under the agreement, Putin committed to releasing 300,000 tonnes of diesel immediately to global markets, followed by 500,000 tonnes in November and an additional million tonnes after that. The US Treasury is reported to be suspending sanctions on Russian diesel exports until 7 April as part of the arrangement, although other frozen Russian assets held in American banks remain unaffected.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky swiftly condemned the deal, describing it as a gift to Putin that amounts to 'an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged.' He warned that Russia would repay the diesel deal with 'further terror' and pointed to overnight missile strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv as evidence of Russia's true intentions. Zelensky called on the United States to take a 'strong, not weak' position in its dealings with Moscow.

European allies quickly aligned with Ukraine's position. The EU's foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, warned that suspending sanctions 'provides Moscow with more revenues to wage war,' adding that Europe would not ease pressure on Russia. European foreign ministers were set to approve the largest package of sanctions against Russia since the start of its full-scale invasion. A UK government spokesperson reaffirmed Britain's commitment to supporting Ukraine through international partnerships.

Financial analysts have expressed skepticism about the deal's practical impact on American consumers. Tim Armitage of Quilter Cheviot noted that the first release of approximately 2.25 million barrels is dwarfed by the US daily diesel consumption of around 3.8 million barrels, making it unlikely to produce any meaningful reduction in pump prices. He characterized Trump's move as 'a slightly desperate attempt' to curb inflation ahead of midterm elections, questioning whether it would achieve its stated goals.

Further doubts surround Russia's actual capacity to deliver the promised quantities. Russian refineries have suffered significant damage from Ukrainian drone attacks, raising questions about whether Moscow can meet the export commitments. Putin confirmed Russia's willingness to supply both the US and global markets with oil and petroleum products, but stopped short of specifying precise amounts. Critics argue the deal risks legitimizing Russia's war effort at a time when international pressure on Moscow should be intensifying rather than easing.

Apple has confirmed a major smart home event, titled 'Welcome Home,' scheduled for the following Tuesday. Invitations featuring a distinctive rainbow-colored Apple logo were sent out, signaling the company's bold entry into the home technology space. The event is expected to center on new Siri-powered devices designed to compete directly with established players such as Amazon and Google, marking one of the most significant shifts in Apple's product strategy in recent years.

The most anticipated announcement is a Siri-focused smart display, informally referred to as a HomePad. Based on numerous insider reports, the device is expected to feature a swiveling screen of around six inches, powered by AC power rather than USB-C, and mounted on a HomePod-like speaker base. Siri on this device would reportedly be capable of recognizing individual voices, enabling more personalized interactions. The display is also expected to support Apple TV and Safari for streaming and browsing.

Apple's smart display is designed to function as a HomeKit hub, putting it in direct competition with Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub lineup. While existing Apple devices like the iPad, Apple TV 4K, and current HomePod models can serve as HomeKit hubs, Apple is expected to deliver a purpose-built user interface and user experience tailored specifically to the smart display form factor, making the new device a more compelling standalone home automation centerpiece.

Alongside the smart display, reports strongly suggest that Apple will also refresh its HomePod smart speaker line for the first time in years. The anticipated update is expected to focus on a second generation HomePod Mini, rumored to come in new colors including green and pink, and to be powered by a faster S-series chip. Analysts note that the timing is ideal for an update, though some speculate that certain reports may have conflated plans for the smart display with those for the new speaker.

The broader significance of Apple's 'Welcome Home' event lies in the company's ambition to reshape the smart home ecosystem through deeper Siri AI integration. With competitors like Amazon and Google already entrenched in the home tech market, Apple faces the challenge of differentiating its offerings through seamless interoperability with its wider product ecosystem. CNET reporters will be covering the event in person, and the full lineup of announcements is expected to signal a new era for Apple in the connected home space.
