Nvidia has officially confirmed its plan to acquire Hugging Face, the widely used open-weight AI platform, for approximately $13 billion. The deal, priced precisely at $12.93 billion, was announced on Thursday and immediately lifted Nvidia's stock by nearly 2%. Hugging Face hosts more than 3 million AI models and serves over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators, while more than 200,000 companies rely on the platform to discover and deploy artificial intelligence solutions.

Nvidia has emphasized that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the broader AI ecosystem following the acquisition. The company pledged to continue supporting both open-weight and open-source AI models. Nvidia noted it is already the largest contributor of open models and data to the Hugging Face platform. This commitment signals that Nvidia intends to preserve the collaborative, community-driven nature of Hugging Face rather than closing it off for proprietary use.

Justin Boitano, Nvidia's enterprise computing general manager, argued that maintaining a healthy mix of both open and closed AI models is essential for the industry's long-term growth. He stressed that Hugging Face's user base can only expand if developers are given genuine optionality across hardware, cloud services, and the broader technology stack. Naturally, Nvidia stands to benefit commercially, as more open-model training and inference will drive demand for its hardware.

CEO Jensen Huang framed the acquisition in broader societal terms, writing on X that open models strengthen safety, accelerate innovation, and enable digital sovereignty for developers, startups, universities, and entire nations. Barbara Doran, CEO of BD8 Capital and a longtime Nvidia investor, described the deal as a great strategic move, arguing that Nvidia is repositioning itself as a comprehensive AI platform rather than simply a chip supplier preparing for a future in which raw chip demand may eventually plateau.

The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2027, subject to regulatory approval. Analysts and investors appear broadly positive, with Nvidia's shares climbing around 2% in early Thursday trading. Doran downplayed concerns about the scale of the expenditure, noting that $13 billion is modest relative to Nvidia's projected free cash flow of nearly $200 billion for fiscal year 2027. The deal reflects Nvidia's broader ambition to become the foundational platform underpinning the entire AI technology stack.

Nvidia has confirmed that its Arm-based RTX Spark N1X chip will launch inside consumer laptops and mini PCs in October, arriving in two distinct hardware configurations. The announcement clarifies months of pre-launch speculation that had circulated online. While a second chip, the N1, had also been rumored, Nvidia confirmed that the N1 will not be available this calendar year, making the N1X the sole RTX Spark processor reaching the market in 2025.

The higher-end N1X configuration, which Nvidia is positioning for both premium laptops and miniature desktop PCs, features a 6,144-core Blackwell RTX GPU paired with a 20-core Grace CPU. It supports a broad unified memory range of 24GB to 128GB, offering significant flexibility for demanding workloads. One notable device using this configuration is Microsoft's Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact machine aimed at developers building and testing AI applications locally.

The more accessible, laptop-focused N1X variant is built around a slightly smaller 5,120-core Blackwell RTX GPU combined with an 18-core Grace CPU and unified memory ranging from 24GB to 32GB. This configuration is expected to power the majority of RTX Spark laptops at launch. Devices from major original equipment manufacturers including Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and MSI are all scheduled to ship in October using this configuration.

Nvidia has offered only broad performance promises so far, vaguely committing to 100 frames per second gaming at 1440p resolution with ray-tracing and DLSS enabled on RTX Spark hardware. Full gaming benchmarks and head-to-head comparisons with existing x86 laptop processors have yet to be published. Specific availability dates and retail pricing from individual PC manufacturers also remain undisclosed, though announcements are expected as the October launch window approaches.

Pricing for RTX Spark N1X laptops is expected to sit firmly at the premium end of the market. The ongoing global memory shortage, widely referred to as a RAMageddon crisis, is likely to push component costs higher, making affordable N1X devices unlikely at launch. Despite the premium price expectations, the combination of an Arm-based architecture, Blackwell GPU performance, and unified memory design represents a significant departure from conventional x86 laptop designs and could appeal strongly to AI-focused professionals and developers.
