Apple has released the release candidate versions of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, marking the final stage of beta testing before the software's public launch. The headline feature of iOS 27 is the revamped Siri, now rebranded as Siri AI. iOS 27 brings a broad expansion of Apple Intelligence features across key apps including Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Wallet, and Passwords. A systemwide 'Write with Siri' tool enables users to generate text or receive intelligent feedback on their writing from anywhere in the operating system. Visual Intelligence has been relocated to the Camera app and now features a dedicated Siri mode, streamlining the experience of extracting information from the physical world.

Apple has refined the visual design language known as Liquid Glass, introducing a transparency slider that allows users to customize how opaque or translucent interface elements appear. Performance has been a significant focus, with Apple implementing multiple optimizations to accelerate everyday interactions. App launch times, AirDrop transfer speeds, and keyboard responsiveness have all been improved, and the system now handles transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular networks more seamlessly, benefiting users on the move.

Alongside iOS 27, Apple has also seeded a release candidate for iOS 26.7, suggesting the company intends to maintain a parallel update track for users who have not yet migrated to the newer major version. The simultaneous release of these two candidates reflects Apple's commitment to supporting a wide range of devices and user preferences. A full public release of iOS 27 is expected imminently, provided no showstopping issues emerge from the current round of testing.

Apple has officially unveiled three flagship iPhone models: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the entirely new foldable iPhone Duo. The most fundamental distinction is the form factor. The iPhone Duo features a folding design that essentially combines an iPhone and an iPad into a single device, whereas the iPhone 18 Pro retains the traditional, non-folding smartphone form. For consumers, choosing between these lines means choosing between familiarity and a fundamentally different way of interacting with a device.

Display specifications differ significantly across the lineup. The iPhone Duo features a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner folding display, offering a compact experience when closed and an expansive canvas when open. The iPhone 18 Pro offers a 6.3-inch screen, while the Pro Max model provides a 6.9-inch display. Notably, the Duo's inner display surpasses even the Pro Max in size. The Duo's folding screen also introduces a nano-texture finish, a technology that is debuting on an iPhone for the first time.

Camera capability is a domain where the iPhone 18 Pro holds a clear advantage. The Pro features a new 48MP main camera with variable aperture, a feature absent on the Duo, where the main camera consequently lags behind. The Duo also lacks a dedicated telephoto camera, which the Pro line includes. Exclusive to iPhone 18 Pro are capabilities such as ProRes video recording up to 4K at 60fps with external recording support, spatial video and photo capture, ProRes RAW, and a studio-quality four-microphone array.

Battery life comparisons between the two lines are complicated by the Duo's dual-display architecture. Apple quotes separate endurance figures depending on which screen is active. Averaging the two Duo estimates yields approximately 38 hours of video playback, suggesting competitive stamina. Authentication also diverges: the iPhone Duo uses Touch ID, while the iPhone 18 Pro employs Face ID. Additionally, the Duo lacks an Action button but does include Camera Control, whereas the Pro line offers both.

Software capabilities in iOS 27 give the iPhone Duo several multitasking advantages, including Split View support and unique landscape layouts suited to its wider inner display. The device also supports a partially-folded StandBy mode and will gain compatibility with Apple Pencil (USB-C) later this year. Both the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro include the new C2 modem, though curiously the iPhone 18 Pro Max does not. The iPhone 18 Pro is available in Burgundy, Glacier, Black, and Silver colorways.
