All cattle accounted for after semi-truck crashes, overturns in downtown Kansas City

In the early hours of Sunday morning, a serious two-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 29 near Admiral Boulevard in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. One of the vehicles involved was a semi-truck carrying 120 head of cattle, which overturned on the highway. Emergency services from the Kansas City Fire Department responded to the scene around 3 a.m. One patient from each vehicle was transported to a hospital with injuries. The overturned trailer also spilled diesel fuel across the highway, prompting crews to begin an extensive cleanup operation.
The collision resulted in the deaths of some of the cattle on board. While a number of the surviving animals remained inside the damaged trailer, many others escaped onto the streets of downtown Kansas City. Reports of loose cattle spread rapidly, with sightings ranging as far as Pershing and Maine streets in the city center, and several animals were even reported wandering into Kansas City, Kansas. KCFD Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins confirmed the scale of the situation, noting that the Kansas City Police Department had mobilized additional resources to help manage the animals.
Wrangling the loose cattle proved to be a colorful and chaotic challenge for authorities. KSHB news crews filmed efforts to corral five cows that had wandered into a backyard near 13th Street and Brooklyn Avenue. Police knocked on the homeowner's door early that morning, asking for help in blocking the cows from escaping the enclosed yard. The surprised homeowner, suddenly confronted with livestock on his property, managed to find humor in the situation, joking that he would likely miss church that morning due to the unexpected bovine visitors.
The effort to round up the animals drew an unlikely mix of professional responders and community volunteers. Neighborhood residents stepped up alongside official personnel to help corral the cattle in what became an impromptu community operation. Among those who came out to help was a young girl named August, whose enthusiasm and relief at seeing the cows safe captured the spirit of the moment. 'We were looking for them, and then we came over here, and the cow was magically saved,' she said, summing up the morning's adventure with childlike wonder.
By just before 1 p.m. on Sunday, Kansas City Police Department confirmed that all 120 cattle had been accounted for, bringing the lengthy operation to a successful close. However, the section of highway near the interchange of I-29 and 71 Highway remained closed as authorities continued cleanup work, including the removal of spilled diesel fuel. The incident highlighted the logistical challenges that can arise when large livestock transport vehicles are involved in highway accidents, and drew widespread attention both locally and beyond.
