Poke, a startup that makes artificial intelligence agents accessible through simple text messaging, has become the first AI agent approved to operate on Apple's Messages for Business platform. Previously, the platform was limited to businesses such as airlines, retailers, and hotel chains communicating with their own customers via iMessage. The approval marks a significant expansion, allowing a standalone third-party AI agent onto the platform for the first time in its history.

Launched in March, Poke is designed for everyday users who lack the technical expertise to work with complex AI systems or command-line tools. The service helps users with tasks such as daily planning, calendar management, health and fitness tracking, smart home control, and photo editing — all through a standard text message interface. With Apple's approval, Poke can now add iMessage to its supported platforms. The move comes just days before Apple's anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference, where the company is expected to unveil an AI-optimized version of Siri alongside new tools for app developers. There are also rumors that Apple plans to open its App Store to AI agents, though Poke's arrangement with Messages for Business is a separate, distinct channel from a consumer-facing App Store listing.

Apple's Messages for Business platform enables consumers to interact with companies directly through iMessage, facilitating tasks like customer support, information requests, and appointment scheduling without requiring a phone call. Poke fits into this framework by allowing users to send questions or requests to an AI agent and receive responses via text. The business model behind Poke's Apple integration is drawing attention from investors and founders. Marvin von Hagen, co-founder of The Interaction Company of California, the Palo Alto-based startup behind Poke, confirmed that his company will pay Apple on a per-user basis. He noted the rate is significantly lower than fees charged by Meta for WhatsApp access following EU regulation changes. At scale, this per-user toll structure represents a potentially meaningful new revenue stream for Apple and a key cost consideration for AI agent startups.
