LG has agreed to disable a McAfee pop-up advertisement following widespread backlash over a controversial app that some of its monitors have been secretly installing on users' Windows computers. The app, called LG Monitor App Installer, is delivered through Windows Update alongside monitor driver updates, and then pushes ads for a 30-day McAfee free trial directly onto users' screens. The issue gained significant attention after complaints surfaced on Reddit and a detailed video was published by the YouTube channel Gamers Nexus.

In the Gamers Nexus investigation, editor-in-chief Steve Burke confirmed that his publication paid $1,200 for an LG UltraGear monitor and replicated the unwanted behavior 'several times' across multiple Windows 11 systems. After the app installed itself, a McAfee advertisement appeared in the lower-right corner of the screen on every single boot. The publication also occasionally observed ads for other LG software products, including LG Switch, LG Calibration Studio, and LG Dual Controller, appearing on affected systems.

Following the public outcry, Microsoft's Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, responded via social media, stating that Microsoft had connected with LG and that LG had agreed to disable the McAfee pop-up as an 'immediate next step.' Davuluri expressed appreciation for LG's cooperation toward a 'shared goal of a better experience' for customers of both companies, and indicated that Microsoft would continue working with its ecosystem partners to improve such issues going forward.

However, critics argue that simply removing the McAfee advertisement does not adequately address the underlying problem.
