President Trump had lashed out at Murkowski in a Thursday interview before her announcement was made public, criticizing her record and loyalty despite his administration's investments in Alaska. The White House responded warmly to Cassidy's decision, with spokeswoman Lauren Bis calling it 'great news' and praising Blanche's performance as acting Attorney General, expressing confidence he would continue effectively in the permanent role.

Blanche's confirmation path has not been smooth. He faced early resistance from Republican Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who withheld their support. McConnell himself has broken with Trump on other high-profile nominees, voting against both Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Cassidy's backing, however, appears to have provided the crucial margin needed to push Blanche's nomination over the line.

To mark the 30th anniversary of id Software's iconic first-person shooter Quake, publisher Bethesda has released a new official campaign chapter titled 'Dawn of the Machine.' The expansion was developed by MachineGames, the studio behind the modern Wolfenstein reboot series and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Within MachineGames, a dedicated group called 'Quake Club'—composed of employees who work on Quake content in their spare time—created the new maps.

The expansion features 19 new levels and introduces several innovative gameplay mechanics. These include a time loop system and a teleportation mechanic that makes environments appear to transform in real time, drawing comparisons to multi-era level design seen in Titanfall 2 and Dishonored 2. Unlike those games, however, the time shifts in Quake's new chapter occur without any direct player input, creating a more dynamic and unpredictable experience throughout the campaign.

The new campaign's premise involves the player character, the Ranger, navigating a dimension where time folds back on itself. Collecting runes unlocks previously sealed paths and introduces persistent health and ammunition upgrades—a layer of progression mechanics that adds depth to Quake's famously fast-paced, minimalist gameplay. The maps also benefit from TrenchBroom, a modern map editor far more capable than the tools available to developers during the original game's era in the late 1990s.

The new content has been added to the existing remastered version of Quake and is available free of charge to all current owners across Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo platforms. This continues Bethesda's policy of providing complimentary updates to the remaster since its release. The move reflects a broader trend of classic games receiving sustained official support, with Quake experiencing a notable resurgence in interest alongside titles like Age of Empires II.

The release comes amid turbulent times at id Software, the original Quake developer. A significant number of staff were laid off as part of Microsoft's wider Xbox reorganization, though id Software has been primarily focused on the recent Doom series. MachineGames appears to have been less severely impacted by the layoffs so far, though further cuts across the Xbox organization are anticipated in the coming months, casting a shadow over future development.
