Carney acknowledged that negotiators had made 'important progress' over the course of nearly two weeks of intensive talks, but said that progress had not been sufficient to protect Canadian interests. He praised his team for working 'in good faith, right up to the last minute,' while making clear that accepting the American terms would have amounted to a bad deal that undermined the net benefits for Canada and cast doubt on the reliability of any future agreement.

In retaliation, Canada announced it would impose matching tariffs on U.S. imports 'dollar for dollar.' Carney described a 'focused response' targeting key sectors including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Those Canadian counter-tariffs are set to take effect on September 8. When asked at a press conference why it seemed like Canada was 'going to war,' Carney replied bluntly, 'Because we were attacked.'

The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The episode highlights the fragility of trade relationships under the current U.S. administration and raises serious questions about the path forward for North American economic cooperation. With billions of dollars in bilateral trade now subject to steep duties on both sides, businesses and workers in both countries face significant uncertainty about supply chains, pricing, and competitiveness in the months ahead.

The HoverAir Versa, a modular camera device that transforms into a drone by snapping on propeller wings, has been effectively blocked from sale in the United States just three days after launching on Indiegogo. The company, Zero Zero Robotics, has stopped accepting U.S. orders and told backers it can only ship the camera portion of the product, not the 'Flight Kit' that makes it airborne. The FCC's online database no longer lists an authorization entry for the HoverAir Versa, strongly suggesting its approval has been revoked.

The situation stems from the FCC's broad ban on drones made by Chinese companies. Zero Zero Robotics had appeared to find a potential loophole: by obtaining FCC approval for the camera component — arguing it was not a drone and that Zero Zero was not on the FCC's Covered List for cameras — the company hoped to sidestep the ban. The camera did receive FCC authorization on August 9th, but critics questioned whether this workaround would hold up under regulatory scrutiny.

The FCC explicitly classifies cameras as critical drone components, meaning all companies, regardless of nationality, automatically fall under the drone covered list when selling such items. This classification appears to have closed the loophole. If HoverAir's camera authorization has been revoked, the camera unit itself — not just the Flight Kit accessory — would also be illegal to import, market, or sell in the United States, compounding the problem for backers who already placed orders.

Evidence of the restrictions is visible on the Indiegogo page, where U.S. browsers can no longer select the Flight Kit as a purchasing option, though the product continues to be marketed. When accessing the page via a VPN routed through Canada, the full product bundle including the Flight Kit becomes visible and purchasable. At least one U.S. backer reported being notified that the product cannot be shipped to their address, raising concerns about refunds and transparency.

This is not the first time HoverAir has run into regulatory trouble in the U.S. When the company's waterproof HoverAir Aqua failed to gain certification in December, the company spent months misleading backers by suggesting shipments were imminent rather than disclosing the certification failure. The Verge has asked HoverAir to commit to faster refunds this time, but the company has not yet responded. An FCC spokesperson also declined to comment on the record.
