Israeli attacks on Gaza kill 14, including mourners attending funeral
Source: Al Jazeera English
Israeli military strikes across the Gaza Strip killed at least 14 Palestinians on Friday, with more than half of the victims struck down during a funeral procession. Eight people died when a drone targeted mourners gathered outside the Ahmad Yassin Mosque in the Al-Balata market area of Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. At least 20 others were wounded in the attack, according to Al-Awda Hospital. Witnesses described the mourners waiting to begin a procession for a Palestinian killed in a separate attack earlier that same day.
The Israeli military confirmed carrying out the strike, claiming it had targeted a 'terrorist' cell in central Gaza. However, the army also acknowledged it was 'aware of the claims that several uninvolved individuals were harmed,' adding that the results of the strike were under review. Al Jazeera's correspondent Hani Mahmoud, reporting from Gaza City, stated bluntly that there is 'no regard for the ceasefire,' as the drone struck people as they emerged from the mosque to join the procession.
Palestinian group Hamas strongly condemned the attack, calling it a 'heinous crime' committed while the international community and mediators watched on. Hamas accused Israel of systematically and continuously violating the ceasefire agreement, using it as cover to kill and terrorise innocent Palestinian civilians. The statement reflected growing outrage over Israel's conduct nine months after a nominal ceasefire was declared, with attacks occurring on a near-daily basis despite the formal agreement still technically being in effect.
Beyond the funeral strike, several other attacks occurred across Gaza that day. A 52-year-old woman was killed in Beit Lahia after a drone dropped a bomb near a school. Additional strikes in Az-Zawayda and Al-Sawarha killed and injured further civilians. In Gaza City, a drone struck an apartment building, wounding several people including children. Another woman died from gunshot wounds sustained southwest of Khan Younis, painting a picture of widespread and indiscriminate violence throughout the territory.
The data organisation Armed Conflict Location and Event Data (ACLED) reported that Israeli strikes on Gaza have intensified since May, with more than 40 recorded last month alone — the highest monthly total since the ceasefire began. The escalating violence has revived urgent questions about whether Israel's military campaign will ever truly end, and whether Palestinians will ever be able to rebuild their devastated communities and return to a semblance of normal life. Al Jazeera noted that drones now fill the skies above Gaza almost constantly.
