RJ Mitte, the American actor best known for playing Walter 'Flynn' White Jr. in the acclaimed drama series Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34. His representative confirmed to the BBC that Mitte took his own life in Brownsville, Texas. Known for his cerebral palsy, Mitte drew directly on his personal experience to portray the defiant son of drug kingpin Walter White in the Emmy-winning series, bringing rare authenticity to the role.
Bryan Cranston, who played Mitte's on-screen father, expressed deep despair upon hearing the news. Cranston first met Mitte when the young actor was just 14, cast after what would become a breakthrough audition. He praised Mitte's growth throughout the series, recalling how the raw teenager gradually developed into a genuinely accomplished performer. Cranston also highlighted Mitte's fierce refusal to let his disability serve as an excuse, calling his passing a profound loss of promise and potential.
Aaron Paul, who portrayed Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, said he was heartbroken and at a loss for words. In his statement, Paul urged anyone struggling to remember they are loved and not alone. Dean Norris, who played Mitte's on-screen uncle Hank Schrader, described him as a sweetheart who he had looked out for as a young person on set, adding that Mitte would be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Beyond his acting career, Mitte was a passionate advocate for disability rights and inclusion. He served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children's, and established The Mitte Foundation to support philanthropic and community initiatives. His representative noted that Mitte used his public platform to challenge stereotypes and champion greater representation for people with disabilities, leaving behind a meaningful legacy that extended well beyond his work on screen.
Mitte grew up in Louisiana and moved to Los Angeles in 2005 to support his younger sister's acting aspirations. His first audition in the city was for an anti-methamphetamine public service announcement. He later described the irony of then landing a role in Breaking Bad, noting that the show itself functioned as a stark anti-drug narrative given its bleak portrayal of consequences. His sudden death has prompted an outpouring of grief from colleagues, fans, and the disability advocacy community alike.
