The polishing process works by carefully removing a thin layer of material from the surface of the disc, effectively sanding away scratches until the surface is smooth enough for a laser to read again. However, users must exercise considerable caution: overly aggressive polishing can permanently ruin a disc by removing too much material. Additionally, scratches that penetrate too deeply into the disc cannot be saved by polishing alone, no matter how sophisticated the equipment used.

The RGR ezBuff also cannot address a separate problem known as disc rot — a chemical degradation of the reflective layer inside a disc that causes data to become permanently unreadable over time. However, the author notes that scratched discs are encountered far more frequently than discs suffering from rot, so the machine's practical usefulness remains high. As Sony has recently announced its withdrawal from the physical disc market, preserving existing optical media has taken on greater urgency for collectors and retro enthusiasts alike.

The open-source release of the RGR ezBuff represents a meaningful contribution to the preservation of physical media in an era of increasing digitalization. The community response has been enthusiastic, with many seeing it as a timely solution for keeping aging disc collections functional.
