Mike Vrabel fires back at Bills safety for wild comments after Patriots' win - Boston Herald

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel delivered a sharp retort on Monday after Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson made dismissive remarks about wide receiver Efton Chism following the Patriots' 29-26 road victory in Buffalo. Gardner-Johnson had mockingly labeled Chism a 'practice squad player' after Chism hauled in the game-winning catch. Vrabel, appearing on WEEI's 'The Greg Hill Show,' responded pointedly: 'For a guy that's been on eight teams in four years? I mean, I guess he knows the drill.'
The irony of Gardner-Johnson's comments was not lost on observers. Chism has never actually been on an NFL practice squad—he has been on the Patriots' active 53-man roster since joining the league as an undrafted free agent in 2025. Gardner-Johnson, by contrast, did spend time on the Baltimore Ravens' practice squad last season before being released, making his criticism of Chism factually inaccurate and widely regarded as self-defeating.
Gardner-Johnson's post-game remarks were notably combative. He insisted the Patriots had 'barely scored' and 'struggled all game,' while predicting that Chism would not replicate his performance in a future meeting. Despite suggesting he was not interested in providing the Patriots with bulletin board material, his extended monologue did precisely that. Gardner-Johnson also implied that quarterback Drake Maye lacked confidence in his best receivers, suggesting the play to Chism was something of a fluke.
The statistics told a different story, however. The 2-2 Patriots outgained the 4-0 Bills in total yards, rushing yards, and passing yards, in addition to scoring more points. Romeo Doubs also had a productive outing, recording six receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns. The win demonstrated that New England remained a competitive team despite being early-season underdogs, complicating the narrative that Buffalo had simply been caught off guard.
The two AFC East rivals are scheduled to meet again in Week 13 on December 6th, setting the stage for a potentially heated rematch. A lingering subplot heading into that contest will be whether Gardner-Johnson remains on the Bills' roster, given his well-documented history of frequent team changes. Vrabel's measured yet biting response signaled that his team is unlikely to let the controversy fade quietly, and the December matchup promises added intensity on both sides.
