Florida authorities arrested Dale Smith Jr. on Wednesday on a second-degree murder charge connected to the 2011 disappearance of his ex-fiancée, Michelle Parker. Parker, who was 33 at the time, vanished on November 17, 2011 — the very day an episode of the reality court show 'The People's Court' aired, featuring Parker and Smith Jr. in a bitter dispute over an engagement ring. She has never been found in the nearly 15 years since her disappearance.
Security footage captured Parker dropping her two children off at Smith Jr.'s home on the night she disappeared. Her SUV was found abandoned in an Orlando parking lot the following day, and her cellphone was recovered by divers from a nearby lake in December 2011. Smith Jr. had been regarded as the primary suspect almost from the beginning, but it took over a decade for investigators to build what they believe is a sufficient case to bring formal charges against him.
Orlando Police Chief Eric Smith stated that investigators took a renewed, focused look at all available evidence over the past year. Detectives reexamined witness testimony and scrutinized conflicting statements that Smith Jr. had made during multiple interviews and depositions conducted over the years. Crucially, Detective Phillip McMican noted that Smith Jr. had given contradictory answers to the same questions on numerous occasions, raising serious doubts about his credibility.
Advances in digital forensics technology proved pivotal to the renewed investigation. McMican explained that investigators were now able to extract and analyze data from vehicles, electronic devices, phones, and computers far more effectively than was possible 15 years ago. He also confirmed that entirely new evidence had emerged within the past year, though authorities declined to disclose the specific details that ultimately led to the arrest of Smith Jr.
Parker's family expressed a mixture of grief and cautious relief following the arrest. Her mother, Yvonne Stewart, told CBS News that Parker 'didn't deserve to have her life ended' and lamented the years during which the person responsible remained free. Her brother, Dustin Erickson, said the arrest had lifted some of the emotional burden he had carried for 15 years. Smith Jr. has consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the entire investigation.
